~ WILLIAM RICE ~

Rice, who made over 300 color woodcuts, was first inspired by the Japanese color woodcuts at the 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. He used oil base inks thinned with kerosene to create washes and used brushes instead of rollers to apply the colors to the blocks. He cut and printed from his own blocks in very small editions, often experimenting with different colors and leaving brushmarks to create interesting textures and color gradations.
