~ CHARLES PAUL RENOUARD ~

CHARLES PAUL RENOUARD   French (1845-1924).

Batterie de l'Orchestre (Percussion section of the Orchestra), 1881.

Renouard began his studies in 1868 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts as both a printmaker and a draughtsman. In 1875 he and his instructor were hired to decorate the ceiling of the Paris opera house, which was the inspiration for his most well-known series of etchings, Le Nouvel Opéra. While some of Renouard's work was documentary, he was an original printmaker whose strength was as an observer of contemporary life. Rather than working in his atelier, he worked on site and frequented all the public arenas of Paris. His subjects ranged from lawyers, criminals, and judges whom he sketched at the Palais de Justice, to the stockbrokers at the Bourse and the musicians at the musical conservatory.
